It all started on January 13th of 2010, with the official launch of the Korean version of Dragon Ball Online, a free-to-play MMORPG set in the universe of the Dragon Ball manga, written by Akira Toriyama. The game was developed in Korea and Japan by NTL/Bird Studio. It was published in Korea by the company known as Netmarble.
A few english-speaking fan sites were made, but the one that grew the most and became the main source of DBO news for the rest of us was DBOCOM, an english-speaking community website/forum created by Citrinate.
On June 15th of 2011, we saw a new release of DBO in Taiwan, published by Wasabii, followed by yet another release (also published by the same company) in Hong Kong, on September 8th of the same year. These two new releases allowed for all foreigners to freely create accounts and play the game.
The end of DBO began on September 26th of 2013, with the shutdown of the KR version. The TW and HK versions eventually followed suit and the developer company NTL ceased to exist.
In 2015, a group of ambitious people got together to start Dragon Ball Online Global, a private server project created for purpose of reviving an old, but not forgotten, cherished game. After a lot of hard work and several test phases, a great amount of progress was made to the game's broken coding and translations. March 1st of 2018 marked DBOG's Open Beta release.
However, the adventure doesn't end there.
The events of Dragon Ball Online take place in the age 1000 (216 years after the Buu saga) with the threat of a new villain group lead by Mira and Towa. They originate from the Demon Realm and are attempting to invade the Earth in the age 2000, with the help of Frieza's army and the Red Ribbon Army (now the Red Pants Army), but they currently have their eyes set on the past by time travelling. The purpose for them wanting to go back in time is so that they can attempt to obtain Goku's DNA, which Mira will then use to strengthen himself for when he invades Earth in the future. Currently, all known henchmen of the Dark Eye have been under the effect of mind control. Mind-controlled victims are characterized by a green gem marked with an "X" that rests in their forehead (in some cases, it may be in their chest or it could also be a mask).
The player takes the role of a character from an unknown time period who is sucked through a crack in time, caused by Mira and Towa's Army. Eventually, the player makes their way to the age 1000 (with the help of the Time Patrol and Trunks) and, throughout the game, the player will be able to travel to different time periods to re-alter the past and fix the present.
It should also be noted that all of the events that the player witnesses in the Age 1000 only take place on the planet Earth, where both the Majin and Namekian races start their journey, just like Humans. The new planet Namek was destroyed by Mira in the age 853 and certain sections of Earth have since been transformed to resemble their home planet.
